This paper resulted from building a large scale enterprise portal for a major bank. It covers performance aspects (caching, request handling, Java problems) as well as architectural issues (fragment architecture, data-warehouse connection, personalization and rule engine integration). Quite technical. 100+ pages.

Starting with reliability problems of large scale portals, this workshop deals with performance, physical and logical architecture, information and distribution models, Java peculiarities and personalization. Can take anywhere between 4 hours minimum and 2-3 full days if going into details of physical architecture (security, loadbalancing) too.
